“I don’t want to be on the menu. That said it might be a few days before we can walk our way out of here. I’ve got line and a hook in my emergency kit. I assume you do too. Let’s get some fishing done before the night is past. Any luck our way and we’ll catch tomorrow’s lunch.” They felt around until they found enough dried twigs to get a fire started. George had an eye-dropper in his emergency kit which was filled with alcohol for cleaning wounds or starting fires.. It was his version of a fast fire starter. Lining the emergency kit were pieces of newspaper that had been cut to fit perfectly into the emergency kit. The kits were about twice as big as a cigarette package. They also held a needle for sewing, of which the fishing line could be used. There were a couple of razor blades, a couple of rubber bands, bandages, a couple of pain killers, a couple of water treatment pills and some salt and pepper packages. everything was kept in a plastic baggie which was a backup to the plastic bag that was used to cover the kit. “We need bait.” George whispered. The two looked around the area their fire had lit up and were able to spot a plump bug scurrying along. Jess caught it and they put it on the hook with the line attached and threw it out into the water as far as the line allowed. A few minutes later Jess pulled in a bullhead catfish that had swallowed the hook when it took the bait. This normally wouldn’t be a problem but the hook was somewhere inside the fish’s stomach and both men knew from experience it would not be easy retrieving the hook. next page | ![]() |
