Bunny Babies 10

“Were you scared? I bet you were scared. I would have been. How did it happen? Did you turn around and there she was? Mrs Needy all teeth and whiskers. Did she pounce first; or did you make your move first? If she missed you when she pounced, why didn’t you get out then? You must have been in position to beat her to the cut-off point.”

Funny was perplexed. On one hand he wanted to get the soccer ball and get out of there but on the other hand it was pretty cool the way Polly was going on and on about how he escaped the jaws of death. Remember the rabbits raised in the cages were always fair game to SK. Give him even a sliver of a chance at catching one of the domesticated rabbits and he would gulp that little mammal down in a fast food frenzy because unlike the wild rabbits, these were not always available for him to capture and eat.

In fact it was a rare occasion that he got to eat one. As far as his owners knew; he had never eaten a pet rabbit. SK didn’t really think the domesticated rabbits tasted better than the wild ones, but since they were much harder to obtain it felt like they tasted better. The bottom line was that any lop-eared such as Polly, that was caught, would be eaten as fast as possible because the owners would be looking for their lost pet as soon as they became aware it was gone.

Funny considered all this as he continued to explain to Polly how he had been tossed further away from the exit by Mrs Needy who was able to cut off his escape route.

“How did you finally escape the big cat?” Polly asked, eager to hear the response.

“Well I, and then I, and by then the cat was being yanked backwards so I , and then I, uh, … got away.”

“Yeah. That sounds about … right.” Polly said, not at all convinced now that she was hearing him tell his version. “So what happened to Mrs. Needy after you made your escape?”

“Well I don’t know for sure. She probably went home all disappointed and definitely hungry cause I didn’t feed her.” Funny replied.
