“Oh I was in the living room one night when the human was watching television. The show he was watching was about war. They were doing a study on why so many young American fighting men had volunteered for an important mission needing done but the survival rate was estimated to be only ten percent. I think you would agree pretty terrible odds. Only one man out of every ten would return from the mission.” Stephen King paused and looked around, apparently just checking his surroundings. “You know what those men who so bravely volunteered for that suicide mission replied as their explanation for why they would volunteer?”

“No sir. I do not.” Funny replied.

“Because to a man, their response was because they would be that one out of the ten men, who would survive the mission.”

Funny looked confused. “I don’t get it.”

Stephen King leaned close to Funny and said, “They believed they would be the one. Nine of ten of them would be proven wrong, but before the mission, every one, ten of the ten men, believed he would be the one to survive. Don’t you see? You rabbits do not fool yourselves into believing that you will all be the one to beat the odds. You accept the odds exist for a reason and you set your goals to realistic results. That is a very wise and very intelligent approach to a circumstance which is horribly surreal and completely unescapable.” He paused for effect and then finished by saying, “I am … impressed.”

“Thank you sir.” Funny said, backing away from the giant cat.

He hopped away with excitement and fear filling his body until it was almost ready to explode. So many thoughts raced through his mind. First and foremost was security. He had to stay grounded and cover all the angles that could get them killed during the escape. It really all came down to what Stephen King chose to do. If he planned on double-crossing Funny then they might be walking right into a trap that would result in Polly getting eaten and him being forced back into his old life. He didn’t think that would happen but he had to entertain the idea. That was really the big risk of the night. Would Stephen King come through for him or not? It was really that simple.

Then there was the short distance between the cages and the new burrow. It required passing through a couple of backyards, one of which was the Robinsons, who had the two cats. What were their names? A couple of old gals who still had game. Sierra and Cascade. That was what they were called. He thought the orange one was the one called Sierra. The grey one was Cascade. The biggest fear of those two was they had no set schedule of when they were allowed outside. Sometimes one would be out while the other stayed in. There was just no guessing when it was safe.
