Bunny Babies 19

It wasn’t all bad. Funny figured the old gals would be around for a few more years and their hunting abilities would continue to falter as they aged. For prey like rabbits, that was a very acceptable circumstance. You see, there is no such thing as a completely safe place. Not if you wanted to remain free. Plus, of course, when you are born into the world a wild rabbit, you don’t get to have a choice.

This may sound like a brutal life but it is the only life prey knows. For them, knowing you are on the menu for almost everything that isn’t a veggie, is a way of life. Just like kids that grow up in abusive homes who don’t know there is anything different, the same is true of prey. They are not without their own weapons however. They are blessed with speed, agility, incredible hearing and eyesight and if all else fails they have that dying from fright thing going so they never feel any pain.

Funny liked to believe when they died they were sent back around and are born into the world again in a different body. Of course, nobody knows for sure. He believed the lesson taught in such a scenario was for the living. Tomorrow is promised to nobody so you should live your life having as few regrets as possible. That meant always doing what you in your heart told you was the right thing to do. When growing up, listen to your parents and trust they are trying to guide you in the best possible direction. Funny had listened to his father which is why he made the deal with Stephen King.

There was no reason to hate him either. SK was just being what he was born to be, which is why Funny supposed that he made no apologies for it. Nature has a place for everything and everyone.

Funny looked up at the sun and it was already starting to edge its way to the horizon. He went through the escape plan one more time to ensure there were no obstacles. When he came to the Robinsons’ place he just did a quick head through the fence to see that the path was clear leading to where he crossed over into his property. When he and Polly went down into the burrow together it meant they were married. That’s all there was to it in the rabbit world.

He went back to his usual waiting spot which allowed him to see the cages while being close enough to his burrow (soon to be known as his father’s burrow, once he and Polly entered their burrow together) to escape any trouble that might come. When the sun finally slipped over into the other half of the planet, Funny hopped over to the cages and hollered up for Polly to send down the line. When it reached him, he grabbed the line and took off with it. The idea being the jolt of when the line went tight would be enough to pop the pin out of its holster and then the cage could be pushed open from inside.
