Bigfoot BFF This is a story about a group of friends that were sent to a summer camp and discovered they had a special friend that would come to their aid whenever they needed him. It all happened because they found him one day trapped in a pit. It had been raining for days and nobody knew for sure how long it had been down there but these friends took mercy upon the creature and set it free. It was a group of four. Noah was the leader of the group. A tall boy not quite a teenager and so thin that people were constantly asking him if he wanted something to eat. The other kids would say that Noah was so thin because all the animals on his ark ate all the food. Ohpra was the next tallest of the bunch. She had a model’s figure and the face of an angel but because of her name and then to make things harder, the strange way it was spelled, made her a favorite target. Either the boys made fun because they wanted her attention or the girls made fun because they were deep down jealous of a girl who was so beautiful. Then there was Gupper, or Big Gulp as most called him. It sucked being a short guy in his class and it didn’t help that he was also a little heavy. Throw in a name like Gupper and it was a disaster. Be short, portly and given a stupid name just for an extra kick in right direction. Finally there was Revere. Given that name because his last name was Paul, it had a duel effect. By giving him that first name it was like gluing a ‘kick me’ sign on his back. It was really bad in history class during the revolution period. A favorite joke that the kids liked to say was; ‘He’s our Paul Revere. Here’s what you need to hear. One if by land. Two if by sea. Three means he’s run away so cowardly.” Together they were the losers tent of camp Cherokee. They had grown up in the same neighborhood. All of them had names which the other kids made fun about. That eventually brought them together. Finding others who were also outcasts, they ended up being a gang of unwanteds. The ‘cursed from birth’ gang. There were three boys and one girl. When she started out being part of the ‘cursed from birth’ gang, she was only seven or eight. Still just a stick figure of a little girl. Now however she was on the verge of puberty and had grown curves that were not there before. It was an awkward time. Ohpra had to get special written permission from her parents stating it was okay for her to sleep in a tent with three boys. The truth was that despite being so pretty, Ohpra could whip any of the boys and probably all three at once. Since the group grew up together her parents thought it was better to have her staying with boys she could whip than what was behind door number three, or having her stay with a bunch of wild girls who would likely be attracting the attention of wild boys. In any case this would be Ohpra’s last year at summer camp staying with boys in the tent. None of the four were what you might call fearless. In fact they had earned the nickname the ‘Frady Bunch’ by the other campers. It seemed there was one night where the Frady Bunch was visited by a raccoon family that was hungry. Big Gulp, or BG as his friends had started calling him, was the first to wake up and scream like there was a bear loose in his tent. Immediately after he started screaming, Rev and Noah followed suit. Only Ohpra held her tongue. When the rest were finished screaming they settled down enough to realize it was not a bear but a momma and three baby raccoons visiting the tent. “Geez I thought I was bear chow for sure.” BG said, catching his breath. “I don’t think my heart is ever going to stop pounding.” Rev added. “Lets get some more wood for our fire.” Noah said. “I mean, since we’re all up now anyway. Yeah, my heart is pounding too.” “Weren’t they cute!” Ohpra cooed. “I can’t believe they were playing with my hair.” “Just don’t let one bite or scratch you. They carry rabies. Not saying they have it. Just saying they are known carriers.” BG warned. The family of raccoons disappeared into the darkness as fast as they had appeared. “I can’t believe they are not afraid of the fire.” Noah said sounding amazed. “That’s nothing. Last year I had three of them approach me on our driveway, when I had some firecrackers. I shot off two of them at once and when the smoke had cleared there were still three raccoons standing there looking at me. It was scary.” Rev said picturing that day in his mind. “They sure are cute. No getting around it. And talk about being dressed for the job. A mask for the night raiders.” Ohpra said laughing. “Remember the John Candy movie where the raccoons asked their parents if after knocking over all the trash cans if they can stay up late to watch the fat guy clean things up. That was classic comedy there.” BG said while laughing, “Yeah, and remember how it was the bear that he had shot all those years before because it was missing all the hide off its rear end. And then after John shot it again, it didn’t have hair on either end.” Everyone in the group was laughing. It was about two hours until the sunrise so everyone decided to calm down and try and get some sleep before the day began. A short two hours later the sun was rising and the group made breakfast and then broke camp. There were campsite spots marked along the main trail. Each one offered a place to put up your tent and cook your dinner. The trip would take them about three days. The first night camping they made camp early because the day was still a bit damp from all the rain the previous days. Small streams were everywhere as the mountain drained the water off it. By the end of the day everyone’s boots were damp if not wet. They decided that by making camp early it might allow for enough time for their boots to get dried out before they had to put them back on. Rev was the boy scout of the bunch. He tried to plan for every obstacle. For drying out boots and socks he had a couple of wire coat hangers which he had folded up into easy carry size. Using his flip out knife, plus combination plyers and about a hundred other tools it could offer: Rev clipped the wire clothes hangers into two separate sections. Then he shoved one end down into the ground until it was far enough to support the weight of holding his boots and socks up near the heat of the fire. Then he dug around in his pack and produced a clean pair of socks to put on. “That’ll keep my feet warm until the boots get dry.” Revere said. The others finished setting up their tents and then joined Rev sitting by the fire. Each did their best to set their boots up so they would dry out. Wet socks were also stretched out near the fire. Dinner consisted of hot dogs which were encouraged to eat until the package was gone. It was a really bad idea to have open packages of food. So they ate all they could and then buried the few leftovers away from where they were camping. | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Everyone was quiet as they were finally done with all the chores of getting ready for sleep and it was the first chance they had to really sit down and listen to the night. The sky above seemed to be extra proud of its many stars because it sure appeared to be showing every single one that night. There was just the slightest of breezes caressing the campers while they sat and listened to the darkness beyond the glare of their campfire. Suddenly there was a loud roar that brought all four campers to the alert. It didn’t sound like it was right on top of their campsite but it was certainly not something anybody would ignore either. “How far away do you think that thing is?” Rev asked. “The better question is what do you think that thing is? Noah said. “Quiet! Listen.” Ohpra said. Now they were hearing the sound of wood being smacked against wood. Like if somebody had brought a wooden baseball bat out camping and then started whacking tree trunks as hard as possible. There were also sounds of tree limbs breaking. It kept up for a few hours. Nobody could consider sleeping. “No way I am going to sleep while it sounds like a Sherman tank is coming through the woods.” BG said. “What do you think is out there?” “I’ll know in a minute.” Noah said, while going through his pack. Then he stopped for a second and said, “Then again I may end up wishing I had not been able to look. That would really suck!” “What do you mean?” Ohpra asked. “Nothing I guess.” Noah replied. “He means he hopes he doesn’t put on his night vision and discover there is a monster waiting just far enough away for the dark to hide them.” Rev said while strapping on his night vision goggles. They made a slight whining sound when he turned them on. Immediately he stood up and looked all the way around in a three-hundred and sixty degree turn. “Looks like we’re safe.” “I think I saw something moving.” Noah said. Now he was looking around with his goggles on. “Did any of you guys see anything moving out there?” BG made a spooky sound and then said, “You mean like that big bear with the blood-stained teeth?” “Roar!” Ohpra said while holding her hands up like they were clawing at the others. She also had night vision in her pack but she had not put them on. She was always accidentally looking into the fire while wearing them and causing herself to be blinded for a short while. Besides, she wasn’t all that interested in what was out there as long as it stayed out there. “Can I wear your night goggles if you are not going to?” BG asked Ohpra. “I suppose.” She said while sighing. Truth be told she didn’t really care for the way he stretched out everything he borrowed from her but most the time she didn’t have the heart to deny him. She pictured him giving them back and not fitting her any more which caused her to laugh. “What’s so funny?” BG asked. “I could use a reason to laugh about now.” “Are you getting scared again BG? Not being able to see what’s out there in the darkness probably lets your imagination run wild, huh?” Rev said while laughing. “If I do get scared I will just ask you to reach into that Walmart you call a backpack and bring out a machine gun or possibly a rocket launcher.” BG replied. “If that’s the case have you got a hot blonde in there?” Noah asked. “Quit lying Noah. You’d be just as happy with a cold blonde.” Ohpra said laughing. Suddenly there was another loud roar. Noah threw a few more pieces of firewood on the campfire. “Cold?” Rev asked in a somewhat sarcastic manner. “No. Just had the pieces here handy so I thought I’d just throw them in.” Noah said. The four friends stayed up late into the night but finally the roars and whacking of wood against wood; stopped. Sleep fell upon them quickly once all the noise stopped. The next morning arrived with all the promise of an unscratched lottery ticket. The sky was blue, there was only a slight breeze and the air was sweet with the many perfumes of nature. The four packed up their campsite and started hiking. About lunch time they came upon an area which had cracked away from the rest of the mountain so that it created a deep crevice that needed to be climbed down and then you could climb back up the far side of the crevice to explore that section of the mountain. This was a little ways off the main trail. They thought about exploring the area so they reached the edge of where the mountain had split apart from the main part, creating a deep crevice between the two areas. This was where they were at and looking down into the crevice. “What the heck is that?” Rev asked. “Looks like its a bear.” BG said. “Something about it is different than being a bear.” Noah said. “Oh the poor thing!” Ohpra said in that girly, ‘i love everything’ tone that girls sometimes use. “I wouldn’t feel too sorry for it.” Rev said. “Because if that is a bear he would show you who was sorry but I don’t think its a bear. Can’t really tell because of the shadows and then this angle of looking almost straight down over it.” “Look at all the different times it has tried to climb out. You can see where it slid back down the wall of crevice. You think it will die down there?” BG said. He was pointing at the walls of the crevice. They had slide marks all along them.
