The next day found Funny hanging out in the green grass area of the back yard. His fur was back to its normal appearance. He was waiting for Polly to arrive. When she finally showed up he took her to the side and gave her a reel of tooth floss. “That’s incredibly romantic Funny. What’s next? The words “I love you’ spelled out in horse poop along the curb?” Polly said with a disgusted look on her face. “This better not be used floss.” “Gross. Besides it’s not for that.” Funny said. “It’s so you can lower the string to me when i am ready to break you out of your cage. I have a plan.” He pointed at his head like he had everything figured out and was keeping it secret inside there. “You idiot! This isn’t a game.” Polly said out of the side of her mouth. She was looking everywhere for signs of trouble. “Here’s what I want you to do. Tonight after dark I want you to lower string to me. Next I will criss-cross the string with a few pulleys and levers and we can get a block and tackle set up. Next I will raise myself up to you using my superior agility and athletic abilities. Next I will …” “Wait!” Polly exclaimed, cutting him off. “Wouldn’t it be easier if I just tied the string to the pin and dropped the string to you. Then you could just run and pull the pin out.” Funny was still in the middle of explaining his extraordinarily complex plan when the words Polly had spoke finally sunk in. “Oh, I uh, well the thing is, I mean, you could, but I wouldn’t want” then he stopped trying to speak and just looked off in the distance as if in thought. Finally he turned to her and said just one word. “Okay.” “Good.” Polly said. “Then what?” “Simple. We run off to the new burrow I have been digging. Get married. Have young uns. Live happily ever after.” Funny said, matter-of-factly. “Wow you sure have everything figured out.” Polly said, impressed he had thought things so far, even if they were likely to be a little harder than that. “It remains to be seen. But yes, I think I have everything planned out as best as possible. Even if all this works out, we will still have our troubles to face. But much like my father and his father before him, I think I have figured out the best case scenario for us. We will still face all the dangers that all our kind face but we will do it together and we will do it wisely.” “Yes!” Polly exclaimed. “See you tonight shortly after dark.” Funny said in a low voice. Then he took off to find Stephen King. next page | ![]() Funny and Stephen King ![]() Stephen King and Friend |
