In his scary, whispered voice he said, “So you want me to cause a diversion shortly after dark so you can break your sweetie out of jail. Is that about the jist of it?” Funny tried not to stutter. “Yes sir.” “And in return I will have another colony of rabbits. You are aware of what I do with rabbits?” “Yes sir.” “And you are okay with that?” “I am not allowing anything if that is what you are saying. I have merely done the math and concluded, same as my father, that we are better off with your style of protection than we are without. But I make it clear that I am not giving you anybody. You will get what you can catch and the only advantage you will enjoy over the other predators is knowing the location of our burrow.” Stephen King shook his head in agreement while smiling. “Let me think about this for a minute..” Why shouldn’t he say yes? After all, what did he really have to lose? Plus he found it curious this little, … snack, had the guts to come up to him in the first place. That little wild rabbit must have it awful bad for one of the two-tones (his name for the lop-ears). Risking his life to speak with me, literally, was very brave. Probably the closest way to describe what he did would be to say imagine there is a shark the size of your school bus, with a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, swimming around in the ocean out in front of the beach where you are standing. Now pretend that shark can speak the same language as you. Next dress yourself up as the shark’s favorite food, and then swim into the ocean to see if the shark will make a deal with you. “Rabbit, You’ve made a deal with the devil. And the devil always collects. I hope you’re as happy you made this deal a year from now.” “Both my father and myself have done the math. More of our loved ones are alive, and are living longer, thanks to you. Faced with our situation, what would you do?” Funny asked. I do see the method in your madness.” Stephen King replied. “I am just surprised you, any of you, find this an acceptable circumstance. Rabbits must be much smarter than human beings.” “What makes you say that?” Funny asked, genuinely curious. next page | ![]() Gus and Stephen King ![]() Funny and SK |
