Bunny Babies 21

During the daytime Funny would have used a piece of mirror he found, to peak around corners. At night the mirror was not effective. He did have one other weapon at his disposal which had saved him many times in the past. Cats were notoriously smelly and he didn’t pick up any scent while sniffing the air.

“Go for it. When you get to the other end of the back yard look for the burrow entrance next to where the properties come together. Understand?”

Polly shook her head yes. Then before he could say anything else she had hopped through the hole in the fence and was making a mad run for the burrow. Funny followed. He couldn’t help but admire her cute little tail as he raced behind her. Then the two were falling down the burrow hole laughing and ending up in a pile of combined wild rabbit and lop-eared domesticated rabbit fur.

In the world of prey things happen fast because they need to happen fast. Marriages happen by simply entering a burrow together. A month later there are baby rabbits to be fed. A short time after that they are up and moving around and the burrow needs to be enlarged and more rooms built within it.

During that all happening there was a bit of a mystery back at the rabbit cages. It seemed there were two missing rabbits. Polly and the other rabbit that had been with Polly. Then there was a small patch of remains found near the cages. The little bit of fur found with the remains said it was the other rabbit that had lived with Polly. Stephen King had kept his word to Funny but had made no promises about Polly’s room mate. Funny didn’t know it but he owed SK yet again for taking out his competition.

Summer continued and Funny got to do all the things that first time fathers do. He taught his kids to hop, how to know which grasses were good to eat and which ones to avoid, where the best places were to hide when you needed to avoid a predator. There was one other thing he had to cover which the other wild rabbit fathers did not have to do. You see only half of Funny’s kids looked like him. Two of the kids looked like their mom. Lop-eared and two colors to their fur. One was black and white, his name was Gus. The other was brown and white , her name was Gabby. They needed to learn that because they looked different, that they also had to avoid human beings or they would be caught and kept as pets.
