Bunny Babies 23

It was a day to remember because on that same day Polly also had something to announce to the family. They had more brothers and sisters on the way. It was quite an end to the summer for the Bunny colony. It had grown into two colonies, neighbors to each other. Both had prospered far beyond any colonies that lived near them. All the others had experienced losses. Some lost all their spring and summer babies. It was a harsh world and that was proved without fail every day.

Fall seemed to only last a month but it was long enough to see Gus grow up along with his brothers and sisters. They spent their youth playing among the fallen leaves which provided perfect hiding for rabbits of all ages.

The first snow of the year created conditions which was fun for the whole family. All the Bunny family gathered at a hill which was a blast to slide down. They didn’t even mind that at the bottom of the hill was a sidewalk and just a short distance beyond that the big scary monster things that had smoke coming out of their rear ends and that ate humans, only to spit them back out whenever it decided to stop. The monsters hated rabbits and were well-known to run over them whenever they had opportunity. In fact the monsters hated everything else that was alive and were known to run them over. Sometimes they even ran into themselves.

Funny had seen it happen once. The humans found out the monsters had eaten other humans because they could see them trapped there, inside the monster’s stomach, even though the monster was all smashed up and sometimes left smoking. So they brought out this big scary thing they kept calling the “jaws of life” which pried open the monster’s mouth and the humans inside were set free. It was a very dramatic day.
