Mrs Needy came closer keeping herself between the exit and the little frightened baby bunny. The eyes of the rabbit darted this way then that, searching for a way to escape. Then the cat pounced. Funny was quicker and moved to one side but was unable to completely avoid the cat’s paw. He was knocked further away from the only exit. Mrs Needy immediately retreated to cover the exit keeping poor little Funny trapped. The light coming into the area was once again shrunk by the shadow of the cat as it positioned itself for a second attack. Once again the big cat started to come at the little rabbit. Funny screamed. Mrs Needy growled as she pounced forward to get the baby rabbit. Her teeth were just a hair’s thickness from his face when just as suddenly as the cat had made her move, it was yanked backwards. Funny heard the teeth clamp shut and he could actually feel the spray of saliva on his face as the cat was yanked backwards so fast it almost left it’s fur in a little pile at Funny’s feet. What could have been so powerful as to yank Mrs Needy backwards in the middle of an attack pounce? The entire area had been blacked out into darkness by whatever it was that had hold of Mrs Needy. Funny had no choice but to sit there and watch. Then the light poured back into the area revealing a cat much bigger and meaner looking than Mrs Needy was dragging her off to whatever fate was waiting for her? Judging by the way the bigger cat was holding Mrs Needy out and away from himself like she was a dirty diaper; it was pretty clear that the big cat did not have much love for the smaller one. The look on his face as he carried her away was the same face Funny had seen on his father one time when he drank sour milk. Funny waited until the big cat was a safe distance away and then he sprang to action. Funny didn’t hesitate. As soon as he saw it was clear to leave the area he darted out and headed straight for the burrow. Down the exit/entrance hole he went, kicking dirt behind him. His heart was pounding a million beats a minute. Finally he arrived at his room. He crouched in his room waiting for his heart to reduce to a beat which was not life-threatening. next page | ![]() |
