“Don’t beat yourself up. It probably takes one to know one.” Dan offered in consolation.

“Oh I’m certain that is exactly right.” Buzzy answered. “It definitely takes one to know one.”

Ozzy watched this all play out and when he had been amused long enough; he gave orders to the boys to go undercover once it became night. “You boys keep an eye on the drinking establishments for a group of shorties that have a shaggy dog, or two, with them. If you spot anything like that, come and get me immediately.”

“No matter how late?” Buzzy asked. “Cause it might be late.”

Ozzy let go a little laugh and said, “Buzzy, as long as I have known you and Dan, did you really think I was expecting anything different?”

“No I suppose as long as you have known us, probably not.” Buzzy replied.

“You’re getting smarter Buzz. You’re getting smarter.”

Chapter Chapter
Night rolled around to find two birds perched on a ledge above a spot in the castle which allowed the two friends to see three different party establishments at the same time. The darkness was held back off the street by kerosene lamps hung at a height of about seven feet. At best they served as markers to keep people from walking into the castle walls or worse, into the moat. However they were very poor at lighting up what was walking under them. Especially at what was walking four feet under them. If not for seeing the bar room doors swing open ever so slightly, Buzzy and Dan would not have seen the group of very short beings, come out of the bar, mostly under the swinging doors but one of them reached up and pushed on them as he walked under.

The night had fell off cool causing some fog to move in. Dan wasn’t entirely sure he saw the bar doors swing at all. “Did you see the doors swing out, down at the last chance saloon? Is that a group of short people with a couple of big dogs?”

Buzzy attempted to see through the fog by squinting his eyes.

“I think squinting works for when you’re in sunlight. Not so sure about fog at night.” Dan said sarcastically. “We’re gonna have to get closer on this one.”

Buzzy sighed. “You know I don’t mind so much not getting to drink like we used to; in fact its been very uplifting the way people have started treating us with more respect and more responsibility.”

“What then?” Dan asked. “Surely you don’t miss waking up feeling like a bus ran over you?”

Buzzy laughed. “You’ve obviously never been a buzzard. We are having a good day when we wake up feeling that way. A bad day is any day you’re hungry and you’re nose is working.” He leaned closer to Dan and said, “We don’t let on, but truth is, that stuff smells just as bad to us as it does to anybody else.”

Dan held his head back away from Buzzy and said with complete surprise and sincerity, “Then why do you eat it?”

Now Buzzy was the one with a look of surprise and sincerity. He answered, “Oysters not only look like snot, they go down like snot. Snails, … are snails. Milk, comes out of a cow’s nipple. Do I need to go on?”

Dan shuddered. “Don’t none of them smell like dead carcass.”
