“Man that would be sweet. To soak those guys before they arrive at their celebration. We know the exact path they are going to take to get there too, if we hit them about a mile east of Phil’s place. The only other way to get there is from the west. The exact opposite direction they will need to travel to get there. Its a no-brainer. They will be coming past that intersection a mile east of Phil’s, probably within the next two or three hours. That gives us enough time to get there and be totally set up to ambush them.” Jake exclaimed. “I want some revenge.”

Brian grabbed a stick and drew a straight line in the dirt. “there’s Phil’s road.” Then he drew an intersecting line followed by an ‘X’ to the side from the intersection. “The ‘X’ is Phil’s house. They won’t expect us to have waterbombs because they threw theirs while riding on the back of the guy driving the bike. They won’t think we will be capable. They might be looking-out for something to happen, but they won’t expect the bombs. We should have two bikes in the road, one on each side, so they have to ride between us. When they do we open up. We will have another bike waiting at the intersection who will begin chase as they head to Phils. At that point they should be pretty much running for their lives. Me and Cory will be the ones on each side of the road. When we hit them and they make a run for Phil’s house: Denny you come out of the blind spot at the intersection and give chase. We will be right behind you. Jake you be down at Phil’s driveway. When you see the dust you will know they are coming. Let them have it again!”

“We better not hang around because once they get to their celebration it might be like a baseball game when the dugout clears. They might all load up in the cars and chase us. We would be outnumbered. Plus they would have grown ups with them if they were driving cars.” Cory said.

“Good point.” Brian agreed. “As soon as Jake throws his bombs we then head straight back until we get to the road that takes us to my house. There is a place that we can go off-road which used to be the main road through this area. If you follow the old road it takes you to the remnants of a bridge that if it still existed, would allow you to cross over the river.”

“I know where that place is.” Jake said. “Yeah, that would be a perfect place to lay low until we were sure the Norther’s were not looking for us any longer.”

Phil’s house was located on what could be argued was the line between north and south in Staywell. So his place wasn’t that far from Brian’s house. If they left their celebration to try and hunt down the Southers, it wouldn’t be safe anywhere for any of them.

“How long you think we will have to hide?” Denny asked. “I’m suppose to be home this afternoon to help my mom.”

All three of the other guys said in unison, “I’ll help her.”

Denny frowned but let it end there.

“Lets go Norther hunting.” Brian said. He started up his bike and led off. Soon there was a convoy of dirt bikes and motorcycles traveling down the gravel road leaving a dust cloud behind them. This was one of those times when they didn’t try to avoid making dust.

When they reached the proper points to carry out their ambush, everybody hid in their assigned spots with the exception of Cory and Brian. They set up, one on each side of the gravel road, and waited for the enemy to arrive.

Both boys practiced hiding their water bombs. They tried hiding it behind their backs, under the view of the enemy, using their bikes to hide the bombs. Finally they went with laying the bombs down next to them just inside the grass that was growing along the road.

They waited about an hour before seeing dust coming from the east. It might be a car or truck, no way of knowing. Then they could hear the sound of the bikes. They made a distinctly different sound than a vehicle.

The day had become very warm. Hot actually. There was a slight breeze but it was not much comfort. Adrenaline pulsed through the veins of the Southers as they waited for the Northers to come riding up. Phil was out in front, leading his gang. The true leader was right behind him, Mike Berlin. Then followed Tommy Wiehner and David Green.

As they came down the gravel road and saw the two bikes, one on each side of the road, they began to slow down. By the time they reached the two bikes, the dust from their travel had caught up and made for quite a smoke screen. Phil didn’t stop but rather just slowed way down as he started to pass by where Brian and Cory were standing. They had placed themselves so their bikes were between themselves and the part of the road their opposition was passing through. Brian shot first. Cory let go right behind him. Each of them got two bombs thrown before the Northers were able to hit the gas and make a run for Phil’s house.

The noise from the bikes being gunned was loud and it echoed through the area. Upon hearing the sound of the bikes being sped up: Jake started his bike and began his run toward the enemy. At the same time Denny fired up his bike and he pulled up to the intersection, hitting Mike Berlin with a solid shot. Water burst and the other three bikes caught the ricochet. Denny did not give chase.

Then flying past Denny at the intersection came Brian and Cory. They had reloaded and were ready to throw again. Jake came at the Northers and launched first a bomb way out in front of himself which hit the front of Phil’s bike, splattering water all over him. There was enough time for Jake to reach into his carrier and grab another bomb which he launched and caught David Green.

Brian and Cory raced past Jake and launched their last attempts at the Northers, hitting the backside of Tommy Wiehner’s bike as he was turning to go up Phil’s driveway. Then they whipped their bikes around and raced to catch up with Jake and Denny who were already on their way to the lay-low spot. When they reached the turn-off Jake led the way up the old dirt road to where the remains of the old bridge were still sticking up out of the river. The boys turned their bikes off and listened for the sound of cars or bikes coming down the road. They waited about two hours before deciding to head back to Brian’s house.

John, Brian’s brother, was waiting for them when they arrived. “What did you guys do?” He asked.

“What do you mean?” Brian responded.

“Phil called. Him and Berlin and a couple of others are pissed as can be. They were headed to a wedding for Phil’s older sister. Phil and Berlin were prominent in the wedding and had a very limited time to get ready for it. Apparently being soaked and then driving through all that dust did quite a job on them. I guess they were late for the proceedings because one of their bikes stalled out from the water and by the time they got up to Phil’s house the wedding had to be postponed. That made the father of the groom get mad and the long story shortened is there was a fight and the end result was the wedding was called off. Its a big, big deal and they are blaming you guys.”

“So what will happen to us?” Cory asked.

“I guess nothing. What can they really do? That is: legally. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are not looking to kick some butt.” John answered.

“Well the way I look at it, they started it.” Jake said. “It sounds like they will be hunting us anyway. I say since they will be hunting us anyway, that we return the favor.”

Denny was quiet throughout the conversation. As it began to lose its momentum, he disappeared. The guys didn’t miss him until they heard his bike start up. Cory went to see what was going on and went out just in time to see Denny turning onto the gravel road from Brian’s driveway. He never looked back as he sped away.

Cory walked back inside Brian’s house and said, “He was talking about possibly going to stay with his cousins the other day. What do you want to bet we don’t see him again until school starts this fall?”

“I am not going to miss him but his mom is another story. She sure looks good in a halter top.” Jeff said. He had arrived just after Denny took off. Cory just missed seeing him come up the drive.

The guys caught Jeff up on what had been going on while they lounged around the pool. Every once in a while one of them would get up and dive into the deep end. The afternoon greatly brightened when Brian’s sister and her friend showed up. The guys had to leave the pool area because of a deal struck with Brian’s parents that allowed the sisters their private time at the pool. The reason given was so that everybody could swim with their friends without the pool being over run by any one sibling’s friends.
Jake and Cory concluded after talking about it one day, that the real reason was so that the sisters could have their hot friends come over and not be bothered by the guys. Of course, there were times when the girls had guys their age come over. They didn’t count however. Just Brian and John’s friends were the guys the sisters didn’t want around.
