The spot they found had a sand bar they could fish next to; it was his experience that this time of year it was a good place to catch some nice sized cats. They weren’t necessarily looking to catch the monsters. They were fun but the best eating channels, flatheads and blues were the ones which could fit into the pan. Of course they were seeking to catch more than enough to fill their pan. They had brought a couple of coolers filled with ice. They would catch the fish at night and clean them in the early mornings and then get the fillets on ice. They had enough supplies and ice to stay out for several days but with luck they would be ready to go back after a couple of nights or three. If they were unlucky and the ice held out they would stay four nights. Friends since high school both men had nine to five jobs back in the real world. They had taken off enough vacation time to allow them to be gone the entire work week. Neither man had a family so their time was their own when not at work. They rode the canoe up onto the sandbar as far as momentum would carry. Then they stepped out into about six inches of clear water and proceeded to drag the canoe up onto the dry land far enough there was no chance of it ever finding its way back by itself. Next they set up their tents and got their campfire ready to be lit. Gathering some loose dead wood was no problem as it was abundant. They were not far enough back away from the water to have trees for shelter so they stretched out a tarp using their tents as tie-offs and next they produced a couple of extendable poles to hold up the other corners of the tarp. They were facing the west however so the tarp provided shade for a couple of hours but then the sun had reached a point where it was forcing the shade line back so that it only covered the upper half of their bodies when they sat in their foldable chairs. next page | ![]() |
